Rowhouse Chicago: 1960s

In the 1960s, row houses were incorporated into many urban renewal projects, both government-funded and privately developed.  A new generation of architects was evaluating established building types and developing new designs and approaches.

At the same time, the city became the frontier again, and many designs included walls for both visual privacy and protection. And of course, one of my favorite elements became commonplace- the hanging patio.  Better known as a balcony.
